Step Four

Challenging Unhealthy

Beliefs and Demands

In the last section, we learnt that how we interpret events greatly influences how we deal with them. But what underlies the differences in the way each of us evaluates the stressors in question? How we interpret stressors and the resulting emotional and behavioural consequences depends greatly on our underlying beliefs, or the ‘lens’ through which we view life. These, as we have seen, include our thoughts and attitudes, the meaning we attach to internal and external events in our lives, and the demands on ourselves, the world and others. Most of us are unrealistic about the demands we make on ourselves, others and the world in general. These demands become problematic when they are not met. Just as we learned to evaluate and challenge our interpretation of stressors in the last section, we can also analyse:

the role played by our personal belief system in analysing stressors

the resulting demands we make of ourselves, and

how to challenge these demands.
